Durmitor National Park

To get to Durmitor National Park in northern Monte Negro, we took a circuitous route through sleepy mountain roads.  We were guided by a man we picked up hitchhiking.  This man did not speak any English, so we were not totally confident about whether he was just using us to get home or also helping us get to the park.  The latter turned out to be true, and when we dropped him off outside his country home, he pointed to the mountains far in front of us and gave us a confirming nod.  It was not much later that we arrived at the border of the park.

We took several hikes around the park.  One very long hike took us far into the mountains up to frozen slopes spotted with blooming spring flowers.  Another took us to small lakes where hundreds of frogs were busy mating.  The park is one of my favorite places I have ever been to.
