Africa Travel Guide - Ghana - Mole National Park

Mole National Park - Ghana

The main attraction of the park are the elefants. Fall is the most difficult time to see elefants, as they hide in the more forested central areas of the park. We were in Mole National Park in September 2015. Our guide did everything possible to find some elefant for us: it was clear to us, he really knew his job. Unfortunately, we did not get to see any elefant. According to the park, it is much easier to see elefants during the first nine months of the year.

How to get there:
The park's entrance is 10kms from Larabanga, 10km North of Damongo, about 70km from Sawla. The road is pretty good all the way from Accra, through Kumasi, Techiman and Sawla. There are ATM's in Bole and Damongo. 50km north from Sawla is Wa, location for a hippo's sanctuary.

Accommodations:

There are accommodations available in the park. We chose, however, a cheaper option: When we arrived to Larabanga, some guys immediately ran to us. This is something very common when you arrive to some tourist site in Africa. There will be youpeople to welcome you, ready to give you information and hopefully get some business. The young men who greeted us in Larabanga explained they were part of some school and offered one simple room for us to stay. No fee was required, but donations were welcome. They were very nice and friendly. They helped us with all the logistics to cook dinner. They were always eager to provide any assistance and worked hard to get a good donation.

Entry fees:

30 Cedi per person,
35 Cede per vehicle

Tours:

The park does not allow the visitors to go for a walking tour or a safari without a park guide. The park makes available walking tours and safaris on vehicles. Both, walking tours and safaris have a minimum length of 2 hours.

Walking tours are 10 Cedi per person and hour.

Safaris on park vehicles are 80 Cedi total per hour (the cost of the safari is shared among all visitors in the vehicle).

The park allows visitors to go for a safari on their own car, as long as they take a park guide with them. In such case, the price is the same as for walking tours.

Price of a safari using the visitors' vehicle: 10 Cedi per person and hour.

It is important to keep in mind prices are set per hour, but the minimum length of any tour or safari is two hours.

The park also offers tours at night.
