Africa Travel Guide - Gabon - Ivindo National Park

Ivindo National Park:

Ivindo National park is complicated and expensive to visit by the tourist. In order to truly experience the wonders of the park, it is necessary to get to the heart of the park, where there is a beautiful waterfall and many animals can be found. However, there is no longer a road to access this part of the park. It is necessary to hire a boat. The whole tour takes a minimum of three days. We were quoted 470.000 CFA (about 750 euros), so we gave up. Instead we went for a short guided walk around the forest, near the park's entrance. We paid 5000 CFA for staying 1 day in the park and 5000 CFA for each person taking the guided walk. Total was 15000 CFA (about 23 euros).

Near the park's entrance there are some rapids on the Ivingo river that are well worth a stop. Coming from Makokou, passed the turn to the right leading to the park's entrance, you will hit the river and the rapids after a few kilometers

Location

Ivindo National Park is located about 10km south from Makokou. To get to Makokou, take the turn off east at Lalara, towards Makokou. The first 100km after Lalara are an excellent, new Chinese road. The last 100km before Makokou are still a decent dirt road.
